SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE GLOBAL VILLAGE SHELTER

PLEASE SCROLL DOWN FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The Global Village Shelter (herein “GVS”) is an alternative to current solutions for disaster relief housing.  The  present disaster relief field relies heavily on tent and tarp structures; these structures offer little protection from outdoor elements and no sense of personal space.  The cost and ease of set up are both significant benefits for GVS as disaster relief housing.  GVS allows any person to set up their own housing without much guidance or strength- no tools are required.  There are no comparable shelters actively on the market.

DESIGN

The design is a simple structure that would give the affected person/ family stability (durability) and safety during a disaster or refugee situation.  To accomplish durability, the shelter has a concentric “ring” structure; the units have withstood winds up to 80 mph.

SPECIALIZED WEATHERPROOF COATING

In conjunction with Weyerhaeuser, we have developed a special coating for the shelters’ walls and roof (interior and exterior).  The coating is both fire retardant (class B) and waterproof, based on ASTM E-84/ UL723 tests. The fire resistant chemical is infused into to the corrugated prior to the application of the water proof coating.  The coating used does not detract from the recyclable quality of the corrugated cardboard.  The coating color is white.

LIFESPAN OF THE GLOBAL VILLAGE SHELTER

The shelter will last 18 months or more.  It is possible to extend this time period by painting the outside of the structure, using commercially available coatings and providing a more substantial floor (not a tarp); basic maintenance like this can greatly extend its life.

TARP KIT

Each shelter comes standard with a tarp kit which includes a 14' x 14' tarp (one side is blue to absorb heat, the other silver to reflect), steel stakes, and ample rope to tie the trap down and secure it over the roof.  In an environment where there is snow, the snow can be piled up along the exterior wall of the shelter for added strength and insulation; this could also be applied to mud, mud bricks, and other readily available materials.  This tarp kit adds extra weatherproofing and wind resistance.

SAFETY AND COMFORT FEATURES

Safety for the inhabitants is enforced a with a dual locking door system; it locks from the interior and exterior.  The door is made from a 13mm corrugated PP material.  The corrugated edges are reinforced with polypropylene extrusions to prevent wear in this high traffic area, also adding strength to the door area.  The door, door locks, and door hinge are pre fabricated and installed prior to shipping and packing.

GVS also offers several comfort factors: a removable acrylic window with a screen, dual locking door system, and optional fire safe stove pipe aperture in the wall.  There are several options that can also be added to the GVS, such as various flooring solutions (including, but not limited to tarps, plywood/ foam, elevated flooring). The cross ventilation creates a temperature equilibrium with the outdoor temps in warm climates- it will not get warmer than the outside temperature- the silver tarp reflects the heat away from the shelter.  In cold climates the corrugated acts as a strong insulate; the blue tarp absorbs heat.

SHIPPING

The Global Villager Shelter is shipped flat packed in two pieces; the roof and the base.  The roof is comprised of 2 sections that are banded together with 1” plastic banding, then wrapped in 6mil clear polyethylene film (heavy plastic wrap), and secured with strapping tape.  The base is wrapped the same way.  The triangular roof dimension is approximately (rounding up) 6” thick, 111” long at the base, and 67” in height. The base measures 4” thick, 100” long, and 67” in height.  All accessories are located in a Tyvek pouch taped to the interior of the shelter door (includes beam tape, roof splines, roof cap, extra ratchet rivets, etc.).  All wrapping is waterproof and will protect the shelter units from handling; loading and unloading, etc.
